Walter Howard Ward

February 10, 1920 — May 21, 2014

Mr. Walter Ward, age 94, of Union City, TN died
Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in
Union City, TN.

He was a 16 year old high school student when he attended the St. Louis Cardinal tryout camp at Union City's Turner Field in 1936. He signed with the Cardinals in 1937 and was sent to Monette, MO. He then played for Union City Greyhounds in 1938 and signed with the Cincinnati Reds. He played minor league ball until he was inducted into the Army for WWII. The war cost him his best years. He played briefly for the Greyhounds again in 1946 before beginning a successful business career.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hickman, KY
where he was in the choir and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp,
where he served in World War II. He had been a salesman for Mills
Morris Distributer in Memphis, TN and was also the owner of Ward TV
and Music Store in Union City, TN.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ima (Matthews) and William
Artell Ward, two sons Ronald L. Ward and Robert Ward and a brother
and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Hickman, KY with burial to follow in the Cayce Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9-11 am Saturday at the church.
