John Virgil Yates

December 13, 1928 — November 10, 2007

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fulton, KY and taught Sunday School for many years in the Mormon B. Daniels class. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin where he received degrees in Education and Agriculture. He played basketball for 3 years and was inducted into the UTM Hall of Fame in 1984.
He was a Mason (Shriner) and member of the Lion's Club for nearly 40 years and was the district Governor for the State of Kentucky in 1974-75, and presently served as the local club's Secretary/Treasurer.
He played 25 years of Semi-Pro Baseball and Softball as a baseman/pitcher and batting champion on numerous championship teams. He was a teacher and coach as well as principal for many schools in our area including Wingo, Cayce and Fulton (KY) and South Fulton,TN. He had lived in this area all of his life.

He is survived by his wife - Edna (Reaves) Yates of South Fulton, TN
whom he married May 22, 1951. 2 sons: Dr. Virgil Dale Yates of
South Fulton, TN and John Keim Yates and wife Kimberly of Dresden,TN. One grandchild - Margaret Lynn Yates of South Fulton, TN, 2 brothers- William D. Yates of Water Valley,KY and Jake Yates of
South Fulton, TN; and a sister - Dorothy Mathis of Paducah, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents- Novella (Warren) & Gus
Everett Yates, 2 brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, November 13th at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Fulton, KY. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. on Monday. Mr. Yates will lie in state at the church from 12 noon Tuesday until the funeral hour.
