Jennings Hiram Kearby

Mr. Jennings Hiram Kearby of Fulton, KY, a former two-term legislator representing Fulton and Hickman counties and attorney for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, died on July 26, 2013. He was 87 years old.

Mr. Kearby was born in Lexington, KY on May 13, 1926, and grew up in Crutchfield, where he attended Crutchfield Elementary and Junior High schools. He attended Central High School in Clinton and graduated from Fulton High School.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Mr. Kearby played tenor saxophone, and was a member of the U.K. Marching Band, the Kentucky Knights dance band and he enjoyed listening to jazz and playing big band jazz. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1948.

Mr. Kearby was a member of the Kentucky Bar Association since 1948. During his seven years of law practice in Fulton, he was elected to Kentucky House of Representatives 1952-1955, where he served two terms representing Fulton and Hickman counties. For 1956 -1960, he was appointed by Governor A.B. “Happy” Chandler, and served as Executive Secretary of the KY Workman’s Compensation Board in Frankfort, KY.

In 1960, Kearby moved to Louisville and served as Attorney for the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Filson Historical Society, and enjoyed US History, especially the Civil War. He would take the family on road trips throughout the US to visit Battlefields of the Civil War. He enjoyed discussing and studying law and politics, current political events, watching baseball and NCAA Basketball. He had an appreciation for music of all types; he played jazz music, and Big Band music on the saxophone. Mr. Kearby moved back to Fulton in the late 1990s. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Jennings Kearby was preceded in death by his parents, Jennings Bryan Kearby and Lois Gore Kearby, his sister, Frances Kearby Murchison, and his wife, Shirlene Vinson Kearby.

He is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Kearby Scheffler (Robert) and two grandchildren, Erin Kearby Scheffler, and Ian Kearby Scheffler of Chicago, IL; one sister, Marion Kearby Eblen (William) of Lexington; four nephews; two nieces.

Visitation will be at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton on Monday, July 29 from 10 -11:30 am, immediately followed by a funeral service. Burial will be at Bible Union Cemetery near Martin, TN.
