Jasper Vowell, II

William Jasper Vowell II, age 89, of Fulton died Jan. 11, 2015 at Parkway Regional Hospital in Fulton.


Jasper was born Jan. 2, 1926 in Martin, TN to the late Roy and Lyvenia
Vowell. He also was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas (Tab)
Vowell, James (Jim) Vowell, Robert (Bob) Vowell and a sister Janie (Sue)Huddleston.



Jasper is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Joyner Vowell of Fulton, a daughter Vicki McLeary of South Fulton,TN and a son Kirk Vowell of Fulton,KY; Three grandchildren Mikki McLeary of South Fulton, TN, Margaret Simmons of South Fulton, TN and Jason Vowell of Franklin, TN and three great grandchildren Dillon Jasper Ruddle, Madeline Vowell and Olivia Vowell, also survived by a sister Maggie Cummings of Lexington,KY.


Jasper graduated from South Fulton High School and the University of
Tennessee Martin Branch where he lettered in four sports. He was starting point guard in basketball, starting fullback in football, played first base in baseball and played on the tennis team. Jasper was an avid bowler, he bowled in several leagues, he bowled many 300 games and bowled a 300 game on WPSD TV in 1962 and won $500.00.

Jasper's favorite sport was golf. He was known as the big guy who always smoked a cigar and hit those 300 yard drives. When he played in golf tournaments hundreds would follow him around to see him hit the long ball, he had a colorful personality to go along with his game. He played with some great golfers in his era such as Miller Barber, Lou Graham, Gene Littler, Dr. Kerry Middlecoff, Dr. Gil Morgan and many others. Jasper said one of his greatest thrills was getting to watch Ben Hogan play golf in person. Jasper won over 70 golf tournaments, had 18 hole in ones and five double eagles.


Jasper owned a retail liquor store, he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was stationed in Italy and was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Fulton.



A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, Jan. 15, at the
Trinity Episcopal Church. Visitation will be at the church from 10 am Thursday until the hour of service.
